Must-Reads for Creatives is a monthly curation of articles + art for thoughtful creative parents. Each post arrives tied together by a gentle thread—because I’m not here to add to the noise. Let’s simplify creative living, shall we? (At the end of each post, I share how I’ve been doing just that.) Bookmark these posts. Savor them slowly.
Wellbeing is not a luxury.
It’s an essential and substantive pursuit.
You deserve wellbeing—every bit as much as your children, family, friends, and colleagues. (Oh, how we single ourselves out as exceptions! But, we are oh-so human ourselves.).
You want to feel well and pursue meaningful things in life. Prioritize these desires. You and your community will benefit.
Wellbeing is not only a personal issue; it’s a sociocultural issue.
Women, especially, are socialized to be caregivers (whether as parents, creatives, activists, or helping professionals). To take care of ourselves, we must shed deep cultural conditioning. Specifically, we have to stop letting our needs come last, after family and financial needs.
If we wait for “free time,” we come up empty-handed and exhausted. Plus, this sexist crap makes us feel resentful (rightfully so; it’s unjust!).
If you suffer to live up to high standards and mile-high to-do lists, look at the big picture:
- Is this realistic?
- From where does this drive emerge?
- Is it a healthy motivator, or would another approach be more self-compassionate?
Conversations, community, and activism create change.
Start somewhere small and reasonable.
Why not chat with a few friends this April? How can you support one another and take a stand for creativity + wellbeing?
